Spring 2025 Catullus
Welcome to the workshop on one of western literature's most insightful and provocative and rewarding --and "in your face" writers. Catullus' extant work is not extensive, but incredibly influential, offering much to enjoy and much more to learn about art and life and love ( in all its meanings) in his poetry.
For our first gathering I would like you to become familiar with Catullus 50, a "letter" from the poet to a friend. You can find it here: https://poems.com/poem/catullus-50/
All the poems will be posted (or linked to) on this page--both in English and Latin.
If you want to have your own copy of all the poems--which I highly recommend-- just get a translation post 1900, and, if possible, one with facing page Latin--even if your Latin is rusty--or non-existent. We will discuss the books at our first meeting. There are usually lots of new or used copies available.
For those of you with a Latin background, if there is an interest, we can have a second weekly get-together to discuss the poems' Latinity.
You can contact me at rudedonatus@gmail.com, or 631-741-6766, or if you want to discuss the poems at greater length.
February 11: Intro and poems 50 and 51
18th: Read poems 1-4. The whole Catullan corpus (in Latin and English) can be found here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_poems_by_Catullus
in English alone: https://www.poetryintranslation.com/klineascatullus.php
poems 1-4 can be found hereCatullus 1 to 4 Latin and English.doc
25th We will look more carefully at 4 (the boat), and move on to 5 (perhaps the most well-known) to 6, and 7
Catullus 5,6,7, E,L.doc
March 4th: now for something different 8, 9, 10 Catullus 8,9,10 L,E.doc
March 11th: look more carefully at Catullus 4--the boat poem-then at Catullus 11, perhaps the last poem of the "libellus" (little booklet) that Catullus is dedicating in the very first poem. I am not providing a translation here. I would prefer that you find at least two translations (on-line) and become familiar with them both.
March 18th: OLLI break, but if you need a Catullus fix, you could look at #63 and #67. They are longer poems which give us a slightly different Catullus--but only slightly different. Keep track of questions that you have.
March 25th: Catullus 12, 13, 14, 14A

Introduction to Latin, OLLI Spring 2022
Tom Hayes, rudedonatus@gmail.com, 631-246-5364
Welcome to Introductory Latin, Spring session.
Whether your first experience or you are returning to an old friend, I hope Latin can be as helpful and sustaining for you as it has been for me.
You don't need anything for the first meeting. We will be reviewing and setting the stage for future sessions. Again, you do not need to buy anything, all materials will be available on this webpage, and should be posted the Friday before class.
Ancillary on-line vocabulary exercises will also be recommended.
A brief precis of what happened in the previous session will also be posted on Friday.
It would be good to download and print each chapter as I post it, since the chapters also comprise a workbook in which to write. There will also be supplementary pages that it will be helpful to have (since we have no way to pass out handouts).
E-mail or call me anytime. If I don't pick up, leave a message. I am probably just screening to make sure you are not selling timeshares on a barrier reef.
